About Scar Revision Treatment
Scars are a common skin blemish and may be located on any areas of the face and body. For some people, a scar is an unwanted reminder of an old wound or some other issue that created a disruption to the skin. While some scars aren't a concern, certain scars are unsightly and unappealing. They may be too wide or too big, dark, bumpy, recessed, or raised. Based on where the scar is placed and its state, scar revision surgery can be performed to improve how it looks. Atlanta, GA plastic surgeon Dr. Fara Movagharnia performs scar revision surgery at the Center for Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery, which is an aesthetic procedure that aims to decrease the size and fix the appearance of the scar. If you think you could benefit from this procedure, please contact our office today for a consultation.
Anyone who has a scar that is unsightly or bothersome or creates embarrassment and insecurity may want to learn more about scar revision surgery. It's necessary for potential patients at the Center for Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery who get scar revision surgery to recognize that although this treatment is designed to improve the physical appearance of the scar and decrease its size, it won't be able to make it disappear fully. The type of treatment chosen will be dependent on where the scar is and the type of scar, as well as the depth, size, and shape.
Types of Scars
There's different types of scars, and based on the type you have can determine the available techniques chosen to correct it. The most frequent scars Dr. Movagharnia sees are:
- Superficial Scars
The most subtle type of scars. Superficial scars don't cause any concerns besides a blemished appearance.
- Keloid Scars
Keloid scars are bigger in size and may be painful. The skin surrounding the scar is typically discolored and grows past the borders of the original wound.
- Hypertrophic Scars
A hypertrophic scar may also be big. They may be thicker and get larger in time, but hypertrophic scars don't usually grow past the original wound borders.
- Contracture Scars
A contracture scar is deemed more complicated as the scar develops across a larger section of skin. A burn is one example of a contracture scar. In many cases, the scar feels taut and also limits movement for some patients.
"A wonderful surgeon and person! - I am so glad that I found Dr Movagharnia! I rarely write reviews, but I had to do this one. The decision to go under the knife can be an extremely scary and difficult one. I want to share that I have had a wonderful, life-changing experience with Dr Movagharnia. I went to him for help with a botched surgery outcome at the hands of another well-known Atlanta surgeon. My experience with him has been nothing short of redeeming and therapeutic. Dr Movagharnia is not only a skilled surgeon, but a genuinely caring, gentle, and hard-working person. During my consultation and preparatory appointments, Dr Movagharnia went to great lengths to ensure that he understood what I hoped for, and that I understood what my options were and what he could do. He shared his expertise honestly so that I could make informed decisions. He went over my chosen procedures in detail, letting me in on every decision that I had previously been excluded from. I’m happy with the transformation that is happening for me, and to know that this was done by Dr Movagharnia! He has truly partnered with me throughout this process. My recovery from the surgery was so much easier than I anticipated, and from experience, I know to attribute this to his gentle precision in the operating room. I was off my pain medication in one week. His sutures were actually beautiful. He followed up to make sure I was doing well after surgery, even over the weekend and after hours. The people working in the office are such friendly, kind people too! Judy responds to every email or call within one day. I feel cared for, and went under anesthesia knowing I was in good hands. I’ve been treated with such kind attention and am so appreciative. Though I’m still healing and my final results will not be evident for another 2-3 months, I’m already amazed and excited! Dr Movagharnia takes pride in his artistry and his ethic, loves what he does, and empowers his patients before and after surgery with information, with proper preparation, and with post-surgery exercises to facilitate healing and best result. He wants his patients to feel proud and be happy and healthy. He has been here for me every step of the way and sincerely wants to make sure we achieve the best possible result. I have had every question or concern immediately addressed. It is critical to be in the care of someone skilled and compassionate. I recommend Dr Movagharnia. He is exactly the kind of doctor I want my family and friends to see."- S.A. / RealSelf / Dec 06, 2019

Treatments for scar revision are often completed in the Center for Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Movagharnia may employ a local anesthesia or a type of sedation based one the circumstances of the treatment. For bumpy or thick scars, a shave excision may be used to even out and level the scar. Scars that are raised and larger can be decreased in size with an oval incision, which excises the scar and part of the skin and tissue surrounding the scar. The skin is then sutured with a thin, clean line. For scars that were created by improper wound healing, this may cause a significant improvement. Bigger scars or contracture scars will often need a tissue expansion or skin graft so that the remainder of the original scar can be excised, permitting enough healthy skin and tissue to be sutured together. In certain patients, it isn't the shape or size of the scar that is the issue but the texture or color. There are several advanced treatments with lasers that may reduce the visibility and color of a scar, eliminating surgery. Lastly, if you have a depressed scar or it looks pitted, Dr. Movagharnia can suggest a dermal filler treatment to produce a more even, natural complexion.
What to Expect
Following a scar revision surgery, incision care is an important part of the recovery process. Dr. Fara Movagharnia or a member of his staff can go over detailed instructions and tips to help you care for your new incision so the revised scar that develops is thinner, lighter, and smaller. Please remember, the scar will not be entirely eliminated; however, a well-performed scar revision procedure can lead to a softer, more natural complexion.
